It was within this short period of time that writing a sentence really clicked for the kids! For about a week and a half I wrote a guided sentence on the board…I like _. Now here’s where you might disagree a little, but like I said it’s okay to disagree…we know what is best for our kiddos! 🙂 I think it is such a pivotal moment in a child’s writing career when you transition them from simple labeling a story to writing sentence.

On those first days we focused on labeling our stories so our readers knew everything there was to know about our stories. Something as simple as letting your kids know their importance during writing time will open their eyes to what you have to say about writing! The kids absolutely love this and everyday I like to ask again to make sure they are my writers….they proudly point their thumbs to their chests and shout, “We are writers!” We discussed some of the books in our library and how each and every one of the kiddos would be an author because they are writers. Over all of that nitty gritty information was the message we relayed to the kids on those first days of writing….the all important message that they ARE WRITERS! Those first few days of writing we talked a lot about how important our writer’s workshop time is, the expectations, and exactly how a mini lesson would look and I explained to the students how I would do the first part of talking and then the kids would have a chance to try it out too.
